Prisons and penitentiaries are usually in remote, deserted areas—far from the beaten paths of society. The men and women who reside there are removed from our view. Out of sight; out of mind. Easily forgotten; easily ignored.
Maybe that is why the writer of Hebrews said, “Remember the prisoners as if chained with them” (Heb. 13:3). At Derek Prince Ministries, we are doing our best to obey that command. We are doing all we can to remember those in prison, and to serve them by providing solid biblical teaching from Derek Prince.
The purpose of this letter is to keep them fresh in our memory, and to share how you can partner with DPM in its expanding prison ministry.
For many years now, the prison outreach of Derek Prince Ministries has been growing exponentially, reaching individual inmates and working with prison chaplains. An inmate can request one free book per month, and last year alone we processed 7,621 inmate requests (around 635 requests per month).
“I am writing to thank you for the inspirational books you have sent me. The books I’ve ordered and read have helped me grow in my faith….You help a group of people most of society would rather forget about. Instead of turning your back on those incarcerated, you decided to take a proactive approach and show us love and compassion.” — Ryan, a prisoner in Tennessee
“The study book [Self-Study Bible Course] is very thought-provoking and really makes me look up scriptures. I like to read the context too, so I get a deeper understanding. And the memory verse cards are a great help. So again, thank you for all your help. I know that God blesses your ministry because you are bringing His word to the world.” — Dann, a prisoner in Texas
Another primary area of focus is assisting prison chaplains, as well as men and women who are involved in direct ministry to inmates. Our objective is to supply Derek Prince materials in whatever quantities are needed—free of charge. (Chaplains and prison ministries usually battle with a severe limitation of funds.)
We received this note of thanks from a prison ministry worker in Mississippi after sending 200 free copies of The Divine Exchange, a booklet by Derek Prince.
“Thanks for blessing these guys. In prison, The Divine Exchange helps them understand their value is in what Christ did—not what they have done.”
Opening Prison Doors
Prison ministry is a clear expression of the messianic commission of our Lord Jesus. In Isaiah 61:1 (words Jesus quoted in reference to Himself in Luke 4:18) we read: “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me…to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”
Similar words appear in Isaiah 42:7: “To open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the prison, those who sit in darkness from the prison house.”
How do we release inmates, open prison doors, and bring captives out of darkness into liberty? How is this possible, when many of the men and women receiving our materials will be in prison for the rest of their lives? Very simply, the prayers, encouragement, and materials we supply are bringing a life-giving spiritual freedom to these precious men and women.
Would you join us in this outreach? Would you partner with us in touching these men and women? The ones about whom Jesus said, “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these, My brethren, you did it to Me.”
Will You Help?
In the many years of DPM’s outreach to prisoners, we have rarely mentioned the financial outlay involved in this work. We have just gone ahead with it.
In some ways, that is not really fair to you. It deprives you of the opportunity and blessing to participate in this outreach. If you sense a stirring to get involved, we welcome your prayers and your contributions.
We are grateful to offer this opportunity for you to support the DPM prison ministry by making your gift today. Thank you for linking arms with us in bringing life-changing spiritual release to the captives.
